Healthy Lifestyle Research Centre – conquering diabetes, stroke and heart disease
Background Information:
The prevalence of diabetes and pre-diabetes in Australia is rising at an alarming rate with 3 million adult Australians affected. Even more startling is that 70% of people with diabetes will develop our nation’s biggest killer – heart disease – which kills one Australian every 10 minutes.
Baker IDI is an independent medical research institute reliant on the generosity of Australians to maintain its world-class research. Baker IDI has bases in Melbourne, Alice Springs and Adelaide.
Project Description:
The Baker IDI Healthy Lifestyle Research Centre is being established to counteract the dire outlook for our nation’s health, by focusing on innovative and novel health measures to prevent the onset of disease. Researchers from many disciplines will focus on lifestyle, nutrition and physical activity to examine the genetic and environmental factors influencing disease.
The Centre is a crucial part of Baker IDI’s overall strategy to address diabetes and its many complications, including heart disease.
Aim of the project:
Our aim is to develop and implement preventative health strategies for the community and influence public health policy. From our evidence-based research findings we will find ways to integrate novel and different approaches to physical activity and nutrition into our everyday lives. We will also develop new drugs, devices and treatment options for people with diabetes, stroke and heart disease. Our ultimate goal is to reduce death, disability and suffering, and to improve the health and quality of life for all Australians.
