The Diabetes and Kidney Disease Laboratory investigates the metabolic and hemodynamic pathways leading to diabetes related vascular complications specifically kidney disease and atherosclerosis. The research focuses common pathways in the kidney and macrovasculature and how both disease entities influence each other. The ultimate goal is to identify new targets to prevent and better treat diabetic complications to reduce the burden of disease in diabetic patients.
Group leader: Dr Anna Watson
In this project we investigate the role of advanced glycation end products and the interaction with the receptor RAGE in diabetes associated kidney disease and atherosclerosis.
Group leader: Dr Stephen Gray
In this project we investigate the role of oxidative stress and specifically the role of NOX isoforms in diabetes associated kidney disease and atherosclerosis.
Group leader: Prof Karin Jandeleit-Dahm/Assoc Prof Merlin Thomas
In this project we investigate the role of MGO in the development of atherosclerosis using animal models and in vitro experiments.

Prof Karin Jandeleit-Dahm is a clinician scientist and Co- Head of the Division Clinical and Pre-clinical Diabetes at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute.
She is a NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and has a clinical appointment at The Alfred Hospital. Furthermore, she is Professor in the Department of Medicine, Monash University and Professor of Medicine at the University of Hannover, Germany.
Prof Jandeleit-Dahm's major research focus is the pathogenesis and interactions of cardiovascular and renal disease in diabetes with a particular focus on the AGE/RAGE axis in diabetic vascular complications.
