Welcome
On behalf of the organizing committee, I have great pleasure in welcoming you to the satellite meeting on The Pathogenesis of Essential Hypertension. This topic is immensely important, the raison d'ĂȘtre of hypertension research.
At our meeting some of the world's leading experts will discuss the mechanisms by which blood pressure is raised by genes and environmental factors related to lifestyle, including high salt intake, stress and obesity. Some of these act on several components of the cardiovascular control system, which will undoubtedly result in vigorous debate as to their relative importance.
One session discusses how the new pathophysiological insights will result in better treatment or even prevention. We are also calling for abstracts for poster sessions on topics relevant to the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. At least two of these will be asked to give an oral presentation of their data. We are confident that the excellent program in the harmonious setting of the Canadian Rockies, will bring us closer to understanding essential hypertension.
