The Nutritional Interventions laboratory is interested in long term sustainable nutritional interventions that reduce the rate of obesity and/or reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, or improve control of these conditions. All interventions are in humans.
A two year study contrasting 25-30 per cent protein weight loss diets vs 15-20 per cent protein weight loss diets in patients with type 2 diabetes and micro albuminuria or frank proteinuria. Aim to achieve and maintain 10 per cent weight loss minimum in 100 patients.
Select overweight/obese individuals with short sleep and sleep disturbances (not Obstructive Sleep Apnoea), test glucose with Continual Glucose Monitoring System, intervene with mild sedatives to improve sleep quality and retest with Continuous Glucose Monitoring System.
Test metabolic response (and acceptability) to four different diet types, place patients with type 2 diabetes on a two year weight loss maintenance plan, change diet if required. Aim 400 patients over two years.
Compare five and ten year data for patients with type 2 diabetes and adjustable gastric band. Compare with weight matched patients from clinics. Aim 200 patients.
