Mauritius

The Institute's long-standing relationship with Mauritius passed a major milestone in late 2009 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Baker IDI and the Mauritian Ministry of Health and Quality of Life to extend our research into noncommunicable diseases, in particular type 2 diabetes.

A further MOU has been signed for family genetic studies to better define genetic susceptibility to type 2 diabetes. The objectives of these agreements are to improve the current understanding of the mechanism of type 2 diabetes through family studies so that effective treatment is possible in the future, and to facilitate an exchange of data between the two parties.

To-date, the Institute has provided support in the form of equipment, expertise, data analysis and sample preparation. This is an important partnership documenting premature ill health and mortality in a multi-ethnic society that reflects our global population.
