Almost 30 years ago, Professor Paul Zimmet co-founded the Specialist Diabetes Clinic, Australia's first Institute dedicated exclusively to diabetes. His research interests span all aspects of diabetes. Professor Zimmet's research in Australian, Pacific, and Indian Ocean populations have provided new insights into the genetic and environmental determinants of type 2 diabetes and also brought attention to the global epidemic of diabetes.

Associate Professor Jonathan Shaw is Associate Director of Baker IDI and has been practising at the Clinic for the past 10 years. Associate Professor Shaw is Co-Chief Investigator of the AusDiab Study, the largest population-based study in Australia examining the natural history of diabetes, pre-diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease. Associate Professor Shaw's research interests include the epidemiology of diabetes, diabetic complications and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in children.

Nearly 30 years ago, Dr Cohen co-founded the Specialist Diabetes Clinic with Professor Zimmet. Dr Cohen is also recognised for having pioneered the introduction of self blood-glucose monitoring in Australia. He has developed a wide range of educational and professional resources, including the Institute's training program for General Practitioners. Dr Cohen is the author of 59 publications and has a keen interest in the application of computers to diabetes care.

Associate Professor Karin Jandeleit-Dahm is a renal specialist with a specific interest in diabetic nephropathy and hypertension. Her research interests include novel treatments to better treat and prevent diabetes-related kidney disease and vascular complications. Diabetes is now the leading cause of end stage kidney disease and therefore, a renal physician is an important part of an integrated diabetes service. Karin has extensive experience both as a clinician and as a researcher.

Dr Peter Simm heads up a diabetes service for young people aged from 15 to 19 years at Baker IDI. As a Paediatric Diabetes Specialist, he has considerable experience managing young people with diabetes. He also has interests in diabetes technology and experience in managing a large number of patients on insulin pump therapy.
