Specialist Diabetes Clinic Co-Founder
Almost 30 years ago, Professor Paul Zimmet co-founded the Specialist Diabetes Clinic, Australia's first Institute dedicated exclusively to diabetes. His research interests span all aspects of diabetes. Professor Zimmet's research in Australian, Pacific, and Indian Ocean populations have provided new insights into the genetic and environmental determinants of type 2 diabetes and also brought attention to the global epidemic of diabetes.
Associate Professor Jonathan Shaw, MD, MRCP (UK), FRACP
Associate Professor Jonathan Shaw is Associate Director of Baker IDI and has been practising at the Clinic for the past 10 years. Associate Professor Shaw is Co-Chief Investigator of the AusDiab Study, the largest population-based study in Australia examining the natural history of diabetes, pre-diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease. Associate Professor Shaw's research interests include the epidemiology of diabetes, diabetic complications and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in children.
Dr Matthew Cohen, MBBS FRACP

Nearly 30 years ago, Dr Cohen co-founded the Specialist Diabetes Clinic with Professor Zimmet. Dr Cohen is also recognised for having pioneered the introduction of self blood-glucose monitoring in Australia. He has developed a wide range of educational and professional resources, including the Institute's training program for General Practitioners. Dr Cohen is the author of 59 publications and has a keen interest in the application of computers to diabetes care.
Dr Leon Chapman, MBBS FRACP
A physician specialising in diabetes, Dr Chapman has been consulting at the Clinic for more than 13 years. Dr Chapman has a keen interest in diabetes, as it enables him to incorporate his interest in medicine with his love of food.
Dr Anne Reutens, MBBS, PhD, FRACP
Dr Reutens has been a Consulting Endocrinologist at the Clinic since 2005. The fact that diabetes is such a large public health problem is what prompted Dr Reutens to specialise in this field.
Professor Karin Jandeleit-Dahm, MD, PhD, FRACP

Associate Professor Karin Jandeleit-Dahm is a renal specialist with a specific interest in diabetic nephropathy and hypertension. Her research interests include novel treatments to better treat and prevent diabetes-related kidney disease and vascular complications. Diabetes is now the leading cause of end stage kidney disease and therefore, a renal physician is an important part of an integrated diabetes service. Karin has extensive experience both as a clinician and as a researcher.

Professor John Dixon is an academic general practitioner with research interests in obesity and weight management. Through the Weight Assessment & Management Clinic, John aims to optimise long-term health outcomes and can discuss a full range of weight management treatments and programs, including the use of specialised diets, drugs, devices and surgical procedures.

Dr Daniel Fineberg, BMedSci MBBS FRACP

Dr Daniel Fineberg is an Endocrinologist with an interest in the care of patients with any endocrine issues, diabetes management, medical nutrition and metabolic disorders. He is engaged in research at Baker IDI exploring metabolic and gene regulatory pathways in diabetes and obesity, and involved in medical education at The Alfred hospital and Monash Clinical School.
Dr Kavita Kumareswaran, MBChB PhD FRACP
Dr Kavita Kumareswaran joined Baker IDI as a Consultant Endocrinologist in early 2013. Her research at the University of Cambridge involved the first randomised controlled studies that evaluated the effectiveness of the ‘artificial pancreas' system for treating diabetes. The system measures blood glucose and delivers insulin required in real-time. Dr Kumareswaran has a special interest in the application of novel technologies to manage diabetes including smart insulin pumps and continuous glucose sensors.
