Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes - A Whole of Life Approach - Educational Symposium - Alice Springs 2014

23 - 24 October, 2014

Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes - A Whole of Life Approach

- an Educational Symposium

Thursday 23 & Friday 24 October 2014, Double Tree by Hilton, Alice Springs.

This Educational Symposium is designed for health professionals who are working with the impact of chronic diseases in Aboriginal communities, in particular cardiovascular disease, diabetes and related complications.

It is aimed at all health professionals, including GPs, clinical specialists, hospital staff, remote health and allied health staff. Aboriginal Health Practitioners and AHWs are encouraged to attend this educational event.

The Educational Symposium will feature a combination of high calibre plenary presentations from renowned scientists and clinicians, as well as workshops on Diabetes Education and Diabetes in Pregnancy aimed at building practical skills.

The Symposium is designed to promote engagement between local health care providers and educators. It aims to expand awareness of evidence-based care and preventative strategies to tackle chronic disease.

The first day will cover management of diabetes and its complications, such as eye and kidney complications plus cardiovascular complications. The second day will cover maternal health, such as management of gestational diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy. To ensure a patient centred and culturally relevant approach, we will include sessions which provide a consumer/patient perspective and which discuss Indigenous concepts of disease and treatment.

Key streams include:
- Complications Streams A & B, to include kidney, eye and foot disease
- Management of Heart Disease
- Management of Diabetes
- Global & Local Perspectives
- Maternal Health

Practical Skills Building Workshops:
- Thursday 23 October, 1.30pm-2.10pm - Diabetes Education Workshop
- Thursday 23 October, 3.50pm-4.30pm - Diabetes in Pregnancy Workshop

Registration is free but essential.
